My past couple of visits, the bottom of my slice has been charred to the point of being inedible. They need to clean their pans once in a while! The worst is having to chew small bits of coal along with each bite- its like eating sand. Blech. I agree that the pizza is fresh and of high quality- but its also excessively greasy, hard to eat because of all the cheese/cream piled on, and the crust is too thick. Less is more! If they just thinned out their crust and balanced this with less topping, their pizza would be worth 5 stars.

I just don't understand why EVERYONE seems to LOVE this place - the artichoke pizza is so incredibly heavy and the crust is just a little too crunchy for me.  The artichoke topping tastes like an "appeteaser" you'd get from TGI Friday's.  I was really excited about the artichoke pizza, but after I tried it, I felt greasy and bloated.  The regular slice doesn't have enough sauce and the sauce that it DOES have isn't salted enough (and if I say something isn't salty enough, that's usually a sign because I say EVERYTHING is too salty).

Damn! Artichoke has a lot of reviews. I can understand why though!

I've walked past Artichoke tons of times and always saw the long line of people that extended onto the street. I knew this place had to be good, but didn't feel like waiting in a long line. Finally yesterday afternoon the line was short enough for me to grab a slice! I got the artichoke pizza of course, since everybody on Yelp raves about it. And it totally exceeded my pizza expectations! I've never tasted anything quite like Artichoke pizza. It almost tastes like spinach artichoke dip on pizza, and that is an amazing combination. The slices are greasy, HUGE, very cheesy, and not at all skimpy on the artichokes. Love it, will be back often, and will recommend it to everyone!

Yay Artichoke!

Here's the secret: They put spinach and artichoke dip on baked bread.  Not much of a secret at all when you consider the name of the restaurant and it's eponymous signature slice. It would taste good anywhere. Clearly there was an accident at a TGI Friday's kitchen with the spartichoke dip and the mozzarella loaf colliding and artichoke pizza was born. It's the slinky all over again.

I'll agree it tastes good, but it's not a pizza. I'd hate to see a tourist come to New York and sample this as a real NY slice. Watch any bum eating a pizza down the street - that's a real NY slice.

|||||||||||||||||||||

Let's talk lines.

It is ridiculous the amount of time it takes to get a slice of pizza. Blame it on the out-of-towner confusion with ordering and stepping to the side, but the workers do not make an attempt to speed things up. People say it's part of the show... that pisses me off. Fuck you for taking so long to take my order.

When you go, make sure to order like a real New Yorker - breathe down the person in front of you's neck, lock eyes with the counter guy, tell them what you want, make them take your money now, encourage the next to do the same. We have to take responsibility for this sideshow. Get you TGI Friday slice already... at least once to sample the hype machine.

I admit I walked in suspect after sampling the latest flood of reviews. Overall, the slice was messy and cheesy and thick and buttery, but it was the transparency of the feigned experience of Artichoke that left the bad aftertaste in my mouth.

Ignore the regular pizza and just go straight for the artichoke. Is there normally a line? No line when I went -- just a crowd enjoying their pizzas outside.

Creamy spinach deliciousness topped with tender, tasty artichoke wrapped up in a slightly-burnt-but-still-very-good dough and you've got a magical pizza eating experience.

Ignore the fact that one slice will knock 2 years off your life expectancy, add 1.7 pounds to your physique, and increase your risk of a heart attack by 12% and you're golden.

Still... I'd rather have had that slice than live another two years never experiencing the glory of Artichoke.

So, I finally had a chance to go here.  The system of ordering is all out of wack.  Either that or customers don't know how to form a line and then move to the side. The head dude was really mean to the cashier (whoa buddy), so be prepared to speak up, get up in their face and tell them what you want.

Oh, you want to know how the pizza is?  Pretty good.  I enjoyed it.  And a good price.

So I've learned that the best time to go to Artichoke is after midnight when the partiers get the munchies.  This will ensure that you don't get a re-heated slice, but one that just came out of the oven.

So its been a couple of months since i've been back to artichoke and boy oh boy... it was HORRIBLE. My first experience at artichoke made my tastebuds thrive. The owners were so nice and friendly (pre long lines and ample yelp reviews). Been back a couple of times after that and i've always been happy.

What happened? What once was a nice and cripsy crust became a charcol unedible mass of dough. Literally all the burnt charcol was all over my hands and face. My bf and i went back to artichoke and i told the worker that my pizza was unedible and black and i showed him the lump of coal that they sold me. He simply said, the sicilian pizza is "supposed to be burnt." Really? i've had silician pizza before buddy, and never was i able to use my pizza slice to write on the sidewalk as if it were black chalk.

i would give them one star, but call me nostalgic for the good old days where i thoroughly used to enjoy their pizza. And the fact that they gave us a refund secures the second star. i'm so dissapointed... sigh

Yes its it a guilty pleasure...

4 things that you never do when eating at Artichoke.

1. If you worry about your weight
yes that artichoke dip is no joke on the calories.

2.eat it right out the oven (ouch)
you will feel the roof of your mouth burn and the skin will start coming apart like Freddy Kruger's face.
3.impatient
on a bad day you will wait 20 minutes, so bring your umbrella, paperback romance novel,or psp.
4, don't try to eat two (artichoke slices that is)
one will do the job of taking away any cravings you might have.

great for between dates, and for eating pizza on the L

WOW WOW WOW. This pizza is amazing. I have been passing this place for about 5 months now everyday and everyday there's a huge line. Finally I decided to try it and it was amazing. I've since been there twice. I always get just a regular slice. Here's what makes this pizza so good - the tomato sauce. It is so fresh and natural tasting. It's not your typical tomato sauce out of a jar (like you'd find at other pizza joints). The fresh mozzarella and fresh basil add so much flavor. It's $3.50 for a regular slice. Unlike the other postings I didn't find the regular slice to be heavy and overwhelming - actually fresher and lighter than other pizzas. There is no menu when you enter so just ask what they have.

Ahh Artichoke. Yelp's hot boy! The big hitter! Seems like I'm the only person on here who hasn't reviewed this place. They even have a "People Love us on Yelp" sticker right on the counter!

Here's my history with Artichoke.

(About 5 months ago): I'm walking home from work. I see an insane line on 14th and I think "When did a methadone clinic open up here? Oh shit that's an artichoke stand, aproprietly named 'Artichoke'. I mean, I like artichokes as much as the next guy, but Jesus!"

(A few days later): I walk by the same artichoke stand and there's the crazy line again. So I ask someone in line "What's up with the line?" The dude responds in a So-Cal surfer bro voice "Man...You don't even know, this pizza is so sick! Totally worth the wait man." I think "Yeah, I bet." So as I walk away, now fully understanding that it's a pizza place, not an artichoke stand, I start to contemplate whether I should check it out.

(As the days turn into weeks) The line becomes more and more retarded and pizza eaters litter 14th street as far as the eye can see.

(Three weeks ago) I start to notice that the hype is wearing down and long lines start looking smaller as the days progress.

(Yesterday) My boo calls me as I'm walking home from work. "I'm hungry!" she says. "Me too, Artichoke actually has no line, wanna try it?" and she replies "YES BITCH!"

So now this brings me to the moment.... the moment where I take my first epic bite of the Artichoke slice and........It's good!

Waiting in line for 40 mins good? Not so much.

Will I be back? Maybe if there's another short line, yeah I might.

NYMag summed this place up perfectly: "The pizza is lumpy, a little heavy-handed with the muzz, occasionally burnt, and undeniably delicious."

I tried the artichoke-spinach (the dough was a little too chewy, and I prefer tomato sauce, but there's a delicious enough reason why this is the namesake slice), Sicilian (thin-crusted, tomato-acidic-and-pecorino-infused perfection), and the special of the day (thin-crust topped with crab meat.  This was a little too salty but definitely the incredibly tasty-tasty.

Artichoke is definitely my favorite spot in Manhattan.  To echo advice from Michelle H, make sure you eat your pizza PIPING hot while standing ghetto-style outside the storefront (or leaning on the topping ledge inside the store).  Don't even think about walking the block to Stuyvesant Square, since the tastiness decreases exponentially with time.

After having taken a hiatus for a while from visiting this place and having read all the less than positive reviews lately, I was a bit trepidatious when I brought a friend here recently. I was expecting the worst and kind of warned him before we went. Well, my fears were unfounded. The place's quality was exactly the same as the first half-dozen times I visited here.

Only differerences were first of all, very short lines! We were eating in about seven minutes! Second of all, crab pizza! (See pix) This stuff was good. Crab meat, cheese, heavy cream, wine and spices all integrated perfectly onto a thin crust (more like their Margarita crust than the artichoke pizza) and absolutely delicious. Reminded me of a crab meat hors d'oeuvre that my mom used to make for cocktail parties.

The artichoke was still the same rich, filling and quite tasty treat so that hasn't changed either. Still 5 stars all the way!

Still no beer yet though :-(

This place had a line at 1 AM on a Thursday nite.  So it caught my attention.  It's a take out joint that feels like you are at the Soup Nazi.  Many restless folks are waiting so get your order right and step aside (so the pressure was not from the cashier, but just knowing there are people who will heckle you if you are too indecisive).  I don't know what I was thinking, but i thought, hm, crab on pizza, i'm feeling wild and crazy, why not.  In all honesty, i would have thrown it out if it sucked after 2 bites simply because i wasn't even hungry and WTH?? pizza and crab??? VERDICT :   Ridiculously GOOD.  it DID NOT have that tangy nasty seafoody crab taste at all. Will return to try out the other pizzas when i return to NYC.

This place would be sooooo much better if they moved to a bigger location and hired more people. It's pizza, was it tasty, yes, was it worth waiting 20 minutes, no.

There is a concept called supply and demand. When you have a big demand you best have a big enough supply!
You hear that Nintendo, making it near impossible for over a year for me to easily find a Wii! After a while I just stopped looking, I did Nintendo, thanks alot.

Sorry back to pizza, same concept though, will I eat here again, yes, but only when there isn't such a big line.

Will I buy a Nintendo Wii, yes, when I see one at Costco.

Long Line
No Pizza for 20 min after waiting in line for 15=35 minutes for PIZZA
Charred crust, blacker than a three pack a day smoker's lungs
And it's hotter than a whorehouse in Saigon in there

Yes! I finally had a slice of their infamous Artichoke slices last night and I was quite impressed.  I popped in around midnight where things were busy but no line at all. Was served right away.  All I have to say is this was one of the most unique and best tasting slices of pizza I've had in my life. I was even willing to throw my low-carb lifestyle out the window for it.  Thick, hot, huge and gooey! You need plenty of napkins and a hefty appetite.  For $4 you are in for an amazing treat.  The crust was baked to perfection and the service was pretty great too.  What would make this a five star establishment is if they had a bigger space for seating.

I highly recommend this place for your late night munchies or when you are in a gluttonous mood.

I fifnally tried a slice of the Sicilian pizza at Artichoke last night and it was one of the best pieces of pizza I have had in a while. The crust was nice and crispy, the cheese had great flavor and there was lots of fresh basil on top. I savored every bit of it. My complaint is the amount of time it took to just get a slice. It was the first time I've walked by and the line wasn't long enough to be a movie screening There was only three people past the door, so I decided it was a good time to try it. The wait was still well over 10 mins. It was packed inside with people waiting for a full pizzas and I couldn't get past them to get a piece that was already made. Maybe it's the type of place that you need to call in a pizza and then pick it up an hour later. They definitely need more organization. There were two employees dedicated to folding boxes instead of serving pizza. I will probably go back because the pizza was that good, but it will have to be on one of my more patient days.

It was my friend's last night in town so a few of us went out for food and drinks in the LES. I live off the L train in Brooklyn, and we were pretty tired from the alcohol and full stomachs so we decided to walk it off on the way up to 14th street instead of cabbing it up there or taking another train.

I've noticed this place plenty of times when I was walking by because there's always a line out the door, which led me to looking them up here on Yelp. Well, last night around 11:30 there was no line so I figured it was as good a time as any to try it out. It was my friend, my girlfriend and me and we were pretty full so we just wanted to taste their artichoke pizza because that's what they're known for.

The guy working was cool enough to cut one of the bigger slices into three. After a few minutes of reheating in their oven we were chomping on some really good pizza. The taste reminds me of cream of spinach soup, but its extra cheesy, has an artichoke kick and the crust is a bit crispy/crunchy, which I really liked. It was pretty rich so this is excellent drunk/hungover food, and if I was a stoner, I imagine I'd gain several pounds if I lived anywhere near this place. I'd probably like it sober during the day too, but this stuff is just perfect when imbibing or recovering from it.

So I got drunk at Barcade last night...and while riding the L train into Manhattan *something* told me to get off at 1st ave instead of staying on till Union Square. And I'm glad I did because;

1-I ran into my favorite cousin, who was kind enough to take my drunk ass home via the 4-train.
2- I got to see what all the fuss was about for Artichoke Basille's.

The line wasn't that long, but it was very slow moving for the tiny pizza shop. However, my order was easy, since they had just taken a fresh artichoke pie out the oven 5 mintues before I got there, PLUS I don't like piping hot pizza anyway; hot cheese + roof of mouth = BAD MATH.

The artichoke slice, at $4 was fucking HUGE, so I feel like I got my money's worth.  But TGIFriday's spinach dip over a loaf of foccacia bread, however tasty, does not a pizza make.

For now, I'm gonna put you on my 'Do-Over' list, and hope that your regular and sicilian slices live up to the hype...

FINALLY! after months of long lines. My roommate was able to pick up an artichoke slice for me and i am forever grateful. I must say, the artichoke slice was phenomenal. You know that great creamed spinach you get at really good nyc steakhouses? Its basically that slathered over a thick crust (minus half point since i'm a thin crust dude) with really tasty cheese and artichokes on it. Big plus on how enormous this slice is. Had to deduct another half point on the wait (fortunately i didn't have to) which is how I was able to get to 4 stars. Also i believe there were only two choices yesterday - plain and artichoke. Get the artichoke!

Yowzah. That hurt.
Like everyone else, I was tempted by the buzz.
The artichoke pizza is virtually inedible unless it cools CONSIDERABLY for a fair amount of time.
I mean, I thought pizzas were supposed to be enjoyed fairly hot ?
This concoction with it's super heated mish mash of artichoke dip and molten cheese on an e--n--o--r--m--o--u--s--l--y thick base ruined my taste buds and burnt my upper lip, yep, my upper lip, not the roof of my mouth......well.......that as well actually.
I've certainly had better, and will certainly not be going back.

Apparently God hasn't blessed me with the taste buds required to think that pouring a can of Cream of Artichoke soup over a ridiculously thick and over-hardened crust and topped with cheese is even a remotely good idea.

But maybe I'm the weird one.

The basic margherita was marginally better but still far from great. Overall it was very tasty, but the crust was a deal-breaker. It's just way too much, especially for this style of pizza.  Seriously, if you're gonna attempt to cut it you need a knife - a fork won't get the job done.

I don't get the hype. Sorry.

Sadly, these guys DO NOT KNOW HOW TO RUN A BUSINESS. The amount of publicity the place has gotten is going to waste. No set hours of operation, random availability of menu items and, I am going to say it first, but I know others have thought this, its scary to look in the kitchen and see whats going on. The pizza is Good...the greatest or close to it? NO. It took me 4 tries before I was able find them open when they were supposed to be. I hate to give a bad review but feel that for some reason everyone (especially the 'media') is giving this place a pass it does not deserve. I fear once the hype has worn out, and customers get fed up with the nonsense of random hours of operation, these guys will pack up and go home and sell to someone less that can run it .

I have been one of the many that has adored Artichoke from the beginning and have stood the test of time in line just to get a slice.  However, the tides have turned and Artichoke has finally hit the point of diminishing returns to become an average pizza joint.  It can no longer be mentioned in the same breath as NYC's finest, perhaps as one of the most unique.

Unfortunately, I would've given this place 5 stars prior to my last slice today.  I love this pizza to crave it often and have been a supporter since the day they opened.  Shockingly no pizza in NY has really blown me away but I have never been as impressed with any slice as I have with Artichoke.

A few things have caught my eye as of late:

* Lines are shorter -  Usually this would be a good thing, but for this place its not.
* Where's the beer? - Isn't this place also a "brewery?"
* Burned pizza - I often wonder if there is more ASH or Crust at the bottom of my pizza.  Eating those black flakes from the oven can't possibly be good for anyone.
* Rising prices - Last week a slice was $3.00 and now its $4.00 for Spinach Artichoke.  It used to also be $20.00 for a whole pie and now $26.00.  That's a big jump and yet they still do not accept credit cards.

Also the ratings have been steadily going down since the first week of July and sadly I will have to contribute to this rating demise.  I'm hoping the the prices dip back down and even more hopeful for delivery but that's wishing for too much.

I don't get this.

The hype, the line, the fanfare.

Doodz, it's pizza.

I was expecting my head to explode and I was expecting to risk my health (I am lactose intolerant) for an entire slice of this baby jesus.

A slice with artichoke hearts, which are perfectly delicious on their own, drowning in what I recognized as cream of chicken soup drowning in parmesan. If I wanted a casserole-esque dinner, I would just move back to Texas.

However, while I am not a huge fan of Sicilian style, it is Artichoke's saving grace the crust was thinner and crispier and the sauce was really hearty and tasty.

I live a couple blocks away and when this place first opened I went here weekly and it saddens me to write this review.  Run by some friendly guys from Staten Island who do seem to care about making good pizza.  Unfortunately, I think they're a victim of their early success.  I don't know whether they just haven't been able to take a breath and figure out how to run a pizzeria or if they may just be clueless.  It's been quite some time since they've been open and I now fear that it's the latter.

Uncertain hours, no real choice, you basically get what they have at the time.  When I used to frequent Artichoke, I would call ahead and order a full pie and skip the lines, but lately the quality of the pizza has gone downward and combined with the spotty service, I'm not sure there's much reason to go out of your way to eat there.

If you haven't been and somehow find yourself close by, they're actually open, and there isn't much of a line, by all means stop by.  You should end up with a decent slice.  My fav is the sicilian.  But if there's a line, save yourself the trouble.

Their signature Artichoke slice finally grew on me.  The bf gets the artichoke slice, I get the plain slice, and then we split it down the middle.  Now I can't go to Artichoke without a bite of their Artichoke slice.

FYI I went to Artichoke on a whim without reading ANY of the reviews and I thought it was the BEST pizza slice I've ever had in Manhattan.  Maybe if I had already read the reviews here then I would've come with a more discerning and expectant palate, but if you go with an open mind and disregard the HYPE, you'll be very pleasantly surprised.

Every time I go to New York I try to seek out new places to eat.  Whether they be fancy sit down restaurants, street carts, late night grub...anything.  By this standard my last trip to New York was a major success.  One of the highlights was grabbing some slices at Artichoke. I was lucky enough to come here with 4 other friends and we split their plain and artichoke slices.  The crust was a little too thick and crunchy instead of crispy for my tastes but everything else was great.  The sauce, cheese and toppings were all great.

This place must be getting some great local hype because a hobo came up and asked for a bite of our artichoke slice.  Not money for crack or liquor, just a bite of our slice.

i've been here twice (once today), i think it's way overrated.  i was amazed i was first in line, but the build up behind me was 10 or so deep.  i waited literally 10 mins for 2 margarita slices and a crab slice.  today's margarita slice was awful.  it was burnt to a crisp on the bottom.  ash proceeded to get all over our faces as we were eating our slices.  the crab slice was terrible.  it was like a salty, soupy goo of mess.

when i returned the slice that was burnt they said that the sicilian is supposed to be like that (i was dumbfounded the guy didn't even look and see i had margarita).  they did however refund us our money...

if you're looking for the best pizza go to joes on carmine for a "classic" ny slice or l&b spumoni garden for sicilian slices in brooklyn.

We walked  twenty blocks in the middle of the night listening to friend drunkenly yap about this place. It totally lived up to the hype.  This isn't the "mythic" NY pizza people on the West coast talk about, it's fold it in half thick, cheese oozin out the sides, artichoke goodness. Sitting on a stoop across the street, drinking a soda with friends, on a warm summer night, was almost perfect.
Beware though, a friend of mine is a regular and I see the beginning of some moobs.

The heaviest, greasiest slice of pizza you will ever eat.  The artichoke pizza essentially replaces tomato sauce with artichoke dip (which is basically mayo+parmesan).

Service also sucks.

Hits the spot if you're in the mood [ie extremely drunk or hungry], but otherwise stay away.

I ordered the signature artichoke slice at my first visit. First of all, it's huge--two people could probably split it. It was too hot and I had to sop up lots of excess olive oil. The crust was almost focaccia-like, very bready and chewy. I find myself eating it up and enjoying it thoroughly though, again, it was way too hot and hard to scoop up. I don't think it's worth all the hype though. I felt sort of sick after eating it--a huge slice, with tons of topping, olive oil drizzling off it, and a very substantial crust? It's too much in my book.  I may go back and sample some other slice though.

If you're looking for something different in your pizza, I'd highly recommend this place.   The crab pizza is great, as is the artichoke (dip) pizza.

Is it worth the wait?  No.  Unless you are dying for pizza that's different.

Anyone who loves New York Pizza should be advised it's thick-crust -- a lot of bread and more salt than I like.  Sicilian and then some, honestly.  And the toppings are not bulky -- you can't really sink your teeth into them, which is odd for thick-crust pizza.  There's also very little inventory so you get what you get.  I didn't know they had crab pizza until the 3rd time I went.  Who knows what else they make -- no menus and the staff are so busy they can't answer questions.

Was $3, now $4 for a slice.  Not bad, but if there's a line, skip it and get something else.

I finally made the pilgrimage - and had a slice of the artichoke / spinach.  Albeit a bit mushy consistency wise, it's truly excellent.

It's $4 a slice - - which is in my opinion reasonable for the quality of ingredients.

It blows say Houston's spinach artichoke dip away.

Just know - no seats, no A/C (the workers were comatosed from the heat the night I was there.)

Im sure crab pizza is interesting (I love crab + not on anything cheese related) but for the others that criticized that on the menu...yelper's let's stick with their core competency shall we? Their name is artichoke for a  reason.
