Easy breezy.  The absolute best way in and out of Chicago by air.  Parking is about $2-4 to drop someone off or do a quick pick-up and there is a very small walk to ticketing or terminals.

One con? Planes sometimes land belly down in the middle of the street.  By "sometimes" I mean once and by "once" I mean one-too-many-times.  It is a little disconcerting when you drive down the street and have to wonder: "Is that bird shit or airplane shit?"  The planes feel reeeaal close.

Now those hookerific broads from Northwest Airlines up in there? That's a whole nother Yelp....

Remember when Midway was like a bus terminal- dimly lit, cramped, dismal, and food?  Forget about it.  Maybe you could manage a stale hot dog.  Sad.

Nowadays Midway is much better o fly in/out of.  The terminal is clean and modern, with many Chicago icons covering your food needs.  If you somehow managed to avoid the Potbelly chain in and around Chicago and you have no other cravings for Pegasus, a Chicago dog, or deep dish pizza, you may as well give into Potbelly just past the security gate.  They aren't your only choice though and you'll find less of a line at eateries closer to  your gate.  Tables are hard to come by at the food court during peak times.   A Piece of Cake has decadent cakes (duh!) with a fudgey icing unlike any I've inhaled before.

Though the gates are larger than they used to be, they still aren't as big as O'Hare's gates so you might have to sit away from your gate until your flight starts boarding.  Still, it seems like there are less delays at MDW compared to ORD, so it all balances out.

A major downer was one TSA agent who was on a mission to scrutinize every liquid item at the security line.  She literally made her scanning partner stop the belt every time a clear baggie filled with liquid containers came through.  I know it is her job, but seriously?!  Every single baggie got a painstakingly thorough search in hopes that she'd find something to confiscate.  I guess some people get their joy that way.  She was practially gleeful when she found something to seize and trash.

I get confused easy. Especially when flying, and more so if I am flying my myself.
Midway is easy.  I can figure out where the hell I am going without wanting to lock myself into a bathroom stall and cry because there's too many people and I forgot to take my pills.
Um... I mean navigation wise for the direction-retarded, this place is way better than O'Hare.
And dropping people off and picking them up is a breeze.

Glad they updated this airport. It is very easy check-in and less congestion here. But I normally fly out of O'hare since it's closer to me.

The one and only time I flew out of Midway I was shocked. . .

- Shocked how you are driving through this neighborhood and all the sudden there is airport in the middle of everything

- Shocked how easy check-in was.

AND

- Shocked by the number of restaurants and shops there were.

Oh my goodness!  I would have never imagined.  It's a really nice airport.     I can't say much about my experience at Midway except I have no problem flying out of Midway when I need too.

Well, well, well... look who I ran into at the same place, at the same time: my hottie bitch ass of a racist. Good thing I decided to brush my hair today. The Universe is clearly fucking with me... first a run in with him during my birthday, a random text from the bitch a few weeks ago and now this. This shit is driving me Cwrazy!!! Stop toying with me Universe! Gaaaaaaaah... such a hot piece of ass....

Ok Anyway, Midway is a nice alternative to O'hare although I really don't mind O'hare either. It's just smaller, closer and more mellow compared to O'hare. My run in with you know who just threw me off that's all. Bottom line, An easy traveling experience at Midway. I really don't expect any useful votes here, I'm just jet lagged and want to vent about my encounter at midway. God my racist is effin hot.. waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...

Man, you really don't know what you've got til it's gone. Now that I no longer live in Chicago, I miss Midway like you wouldn't believe.

So easy! Just one terminal! A well-managed security line! Interesting stores and pretty decent food establishments! Ridiculously simple to get to and from!

Now that I think about it, Midway is probably the best airport I've ever dealt with on a long-term basis.

Wait, I can order a beer to go? In the airport?

You've got to be fucking with me. This isn't Vegas. This isn't Europe. This is Illinois. Or...heaven?

And yes, you can take your half-drunk beer on the plane when you board. Swear.

Reasons I love Midway:

- You can drink at the gate.  This is important to me as I love to drink and need to have at least 2 drinks to be anywhere near enjoyable on the flight.  There's an Irish Bar in the food court area that has Guinness and another place next door that has Blue Moon.  Both are enough to make me happy.

- It's not O'Hare.  Unlike O'Hare flights often take off on time.  It's also easier to navigate and less time in security.  With O'Hare as it's main competition, it's easy to look good.

- Picking people up is a breeze.  At O'Hare I would never consider parking when picking somebody up which is hard with my cellphoneless mom.  At Midway I almost prefer to because it's so easy and if you're in and out you don't even have to pay.

-Potbelly's.  I know they're everywhere in Chicago but I can't get enough.  When I move from here I can see myself connecting through Midway to get my Potbelly's fix.  Also, back to number one, you can have Potbelly's and beer.

The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is the landings on the short runway can be no fun and the lack of airline choices.

Midway is a great way to get into/out of Chicago. It's easy to get downtown from the airport courtesy of the Orange Line. $2 and a half hour of your time is all it takes to get downtown. Anyhow, back to the airport. The airport is manageable and clean (I've never been to O'hare so I can't compare the two airports). I will say, the bathrooms should be bigger, especially for those peak travel periods, as there was a wait in every bathroom when I landed on a Friday morning. The airport is easy to navigate and there is a decent selection of stores and places to eat. A lot of the restaurants are offshoots of popular Chicago restaurants of varying cuisines (Harry Karay's and Pegasus on the Fly are examples). Security officials seemed easy to deal with, which is always a huge plus for me. Overall, if you're looking for an easy way to fly into Chicago and can get a direct flight to both O'hare and Midway, consider the flight to Midway for a relatively low stress airport experience.

i've been traveling fairly often lately, always out of Midway, and i'm getting to like it more than I used to.
i HATE the walk from the L stop to security.  It can't get any uglier or more inconvenient. Very poorly designed, and every time I am there, I think about that.
the TSA people seem friendlier and better-trained here than anywhere else I have been.

I have to say I was quite impressed with Midway.  Being a Continental flyer, I cringed when the best deal to Vegas was on Southwest but took it to save some cash.  Got there very very early and had Potbelly's breakfast  (ick, but another review for another time!) and then b/c I'm a baby on planes went looking for the bar.  We went to locate our gate first, and what's next door?  A bar!  The Oak St. something-something...and you can take your beer on board (no liquor though)?!  It's my dream airport!  The bartender was awesome and everyone we encountered was pleasant and nice.

My only problems with Midway is getting there.  Coming from Wrigleyville it's not close.  Red to Orange for a looong way!  And then you have to walk forever w/ all your luggage once you get off the train!  That was a bit much - and then the Orange line doesn't run 24 hours so we almost missed the last train out due to our luggage being mis-located.  Went outside to ask about a cab and was quoted $45...geez...I make it from ORD on $30 with tip!  Nevermind!

Speaking of the luggage - it seems that ours and 2 other flights from Vegas all got some of everyone's luggage so you have all these confused people running around - most of us didn't get our luggage until an hour after we had left the plane!  It was nuts - and we couldn't find a worker that knew what was going on.  That was an irritating moment.

*but* (see I go back and forth on Midway hence the 3 star rating) the new way to get through the security check point is awesome!  No more waiting behind strollers and babies!!  And the times I go through with practically nothing, I'm 'experting' it and flying through!!  I hope other airports catch on to this.

All-in-all not a bad experience but with the way flights are getting moved or canceled that whole 'last train at 11PM' makes me nervous.  But I'm luvin' the booze friendly airport!!

I love flying into or out of this airport - it's still a bit of a trek to the Red Line but hopefully the construction will be completed soon.

Lame that they don't have free Internet yet but the food is good and its relatively easy to navigate.

Decent airport and with my experiences flying into and out of Chicago has always treated me better than the more popular O'Hare. You can easily grab a train from the city and get to the airport in about 40 minutes for only $2.

Seriously.... When it comes to Chicago airport, if you are flying domestically....Don't use O'Hare!!!

Midway has a lower percentage of canceled/delayed flights, its easier to maneuver around, and sooo much less traffic.

Ive never had a bad experience using Midway!

I want to love Midway but I don't.  I want to prefer the ease of a mid-size airport over the busy ORD but I don't.  Why?  Because they are such an awkward size with a very stupid layout.  Wanting to be small, they don't have much down the terminal halls.  Instead, they have one large area just after you pass security.  Wanting to be big, they have terminals that go on for miles and heaven forbid you get the lovely gate at the end of the 4 block walk down a narrow jetway-like hall.  You can't have your cake and eat it too.  If you are going to have such extensive terminals, then put in some amenities!

My other (and larger) issue is the layout from checkin and/or baggage claim to the terminals.  You have to pass over six-lane Cicero to get to security, for godsake!  And once past security, your terminal might be another two block walk or more!

Midway rocks. This former glorified bus station has transformed itself into a top echelon airport. Almost to the point where if I can't fly directly out of it, I ain't flyin'!!!

A few of things to consider:

First, it's only about a 20 minute L ride (Orange Line) from the Loop. I do not recommend cabbing it or driving if avoidable; you never know what idiot is gonna cause an accident on 55 and back up traffic for miles.

Second, the security check point now features color-coded lines in accordance to your ID-showing, shoe-unlacing skillz. Green for families with strollers, blue for the "casual" tourists, and 2x black diamond for the _Experts_. GO WITH THE BLUE! I don't care if you can take your laptop out of the backpack with one hand while the other unbuckles your belt, you will get stuck behind some consultant yapping on his blackberry about rescheduling a pre-meeting brainstorming session on ways to increase productivity. Idiot. And even if everyone ahead of you have the mad skillz, there's only 1 line to accomodate!

Third, when there's a blizzard but you go to the airport anyway hoping against hope that your flight, just your flight, can takeoff, well you'll need something to fall back on when reality sets in. Midway has an enormous edge over O'Hare in bars, both in quantity (you can get pretty liquored up doing a pubcrawl down Concourse A) and quality (no Chillis!).

Happy travels everyone!

It's an airport. Pretty standard fare. Don't come here if you're searching for a train or a boat.

The moving walkways are fun. Watch yourself when disembarking, especially if you're wearing shoes with slippery soles. Unless you like looking like Tom Cruise in Risky Business. I couldn't find any candelabras handy to do the microphone thing.

I didn't get the opportunity to experience the baggage claim, security, or finding transportation.

I did, however, wander through Midway Avenue, the food court between Concourse A and B. Pretty standard mall food court, except I couldn't find any teeny-boppers oh-my-gawd-lol-ing. It's kind of drab, but maybe I'm spoiled by Sea-Tac's awesome new mall/court area.

There were some seriously old people here. Have you noticed that old people mosey? Sometimes they meander? But mostly the mosey thing. I can't wait until I learn that skill in like 20 years. I think it's required that you have to have your mouth gaping open while you do it.

When I fly, I fly Southwest, which means I fly out of Midway.  Though, no matter what airline I fly, I would choose Midway, hands down, over O'Hare (if that was possible 100% of the time).

Midway is smaller and I it's is just more organized.  You can get there within 45 minutes of your flight leaving and still make it to the gate with time to spare.  The security lines move fast and they are very efficient.

Now I can't say anything about how Midway used to be (I guess it wasn't that great back in the day), but I think it's the greatest airport.  I'm originally from Cleveland and that airport is way too big.  One time I swear I walked for 20 minutes to get to baggage claim at CLE.  It takes about 5 minutes to get anywhere in Midway.

When it comes to flying smaller is better and Midway is great!  I'm actually flying out of there tonight.

Eh, Midway is an alright airport. I always fly Southwest out of here. The only annoying part is the ONE ramp that leads to departures/arrivals. If you're here during a busy time, you're screwed. Really, ONE ramp? Who thought that would be a good idea?

And you always get the great pleasure of being screamed at by the traffic cops for waiting to pick someone up, so you'll get a really nice tour going around in circles. They should have a waiting area with the flight times like at Sky Harbor.

I travel a lot for work, so I've seen airports all over the country, and after my recent visit to Chicago, I've gotta say... I'm pretty impressed with Midway. For some reason, I pictured Midway being some circa 1970s dump in my head (Dallas Love Field, anyone?), but upon getting off the plane, I was pleasantly surprised by the modernity of the terminals. I was even more impressed with relatively short ride into downtown, especially compared to O'Hare. On my return flight, which was on a Thursday evening (always notorious for being crowded due to other road warriors like myself), I breezed through security in less than 5 minutes, which almost never happens except in Austin. There was a decent selection of food while I waited for my flight, and as another reviewed mentioned, there didn't seem to be any restrictions on walking around the terminal with a beer. Bonus point for restroom stalls that open outward rather than inward! I don't know why most airports do it the other way around.

Sidenote: landing at Midway is like landing on the aircraft carrier Midway. Be prepared for a hard landing followed by the pilot really jamming on the brakes. Fun stuff!

Conveniently located on the Orange line, this airport has a Southwest Airlines terminal which is what I use to frequently travel. Getting through security is mostly painless on any given day, the concourse design is logical and efficient.

It's good to know that the Orange line does not run all night, and if your flight is delayed late into the evening/early morning, you are in for quite a wait at the cab stand to get home.

As far as airports go, this one is pretty awesome and easily 10 times better than flying into O'Hare. I took a direct flight on Southwest from San Jose and was there over a half hour early. It is so much closer to downtown compared to O'Hare and smaller so it doesn't take you an hour to walk to baggage claim. On the way out we ate dinner there and there were more food choices than I could even begin to process. Security was quick, and there was plenty of seating at our gate while waiting. Overall the experience was pleasant, something you can't often say about traveling through Chicago. I will fly into Midway the next time I come to Chicago, no doubt about that.

I will pick Midway over O'Hare anyday.

Much better and convenient ride to/from Midway (with luggage, Orange line so much better than Blue line). No matter what day it is, or how busy they are the security check point goes by very smoothly and quickly, and they always have a ton of lanes open.

I also like Midway more because they have  Potbelly Sandwich works in there, and I looove me some Potbelly.

When I used to fly O'Hare, more times than not, my flights were extremely delayed or cancelled, but I have only had that problem once at Midway, and that was because of the airport the plane was coming from. Also, Southwest goes to midway, and my trips always seem to be cheaper through here.

The smaller size makes it less crowded and hectic, and everything just seems to run much more smoothly.

I just wish the cta station was closer to baggage claim, it can get rough dragging your bags along that long stretch sometimes.

Outside of the flight that I just took (to Georgia and back home) I hadn't been to Midway in years....I had a very good experience-no delays, got my bags, it was clean. By far, not the worst airport I've ever been in (can you say LaGuardia) and if not for the distance to and from my house, I wouldn't  mind flying out of Midway more often. I had a ride to the airport, but didn't have one home. Thank you for the Orange Line city of Chicago. I had my daughter with me, so for the convenience of walking through the airport to get to the train, I say thank you!!!!!!

Would like to see more food choices...that's my only gripe!

Midway is small and convenient - the one security entrance goes by pretty quickly.  I do wish they had a greater selection of restaurants in their food courts.

I have to say that I've NEVER received my baggage in a timely manner.  It always seems like twenty other flights have arrived fifteen minutes before/after mine and that at least four other flights are using the same carousel too.

Also, if you are riding the El to Midway and you are late, you are in an unfortunate situation.  In comparison to O'hare, whose El stop is pretty close to the terminal, the El stop at Midway has to be at least a mile away from the inside of the airport.  Granted, there are many more stairs for you to climb from the El to the inside of O'hare (these absolutely killed me on one occasion when I had 15 minutes from getting off the blue line to get to my departure gate), you have to be ready for a cardio workout if you're using the orange line to Midway and in a rush.

It's just as bad the other way around.  After a long flight, if you have a lot of baggage you get to HAUL everything to the El stop, and when the little stretch of the moving walkways aren't working I just want to die.

I also prefer O'hare because of its proximity to me for the time being.  My trip to Evanston from LA into Midway has to be the one thing I've dreaded most regularly for the past four years.  A typical trip will include:

A 4.5 hour flight.
A 45 minute wait for my baggage.
A mile walk to the El stop.
A 25 minute ride into the city.
An hour ride into Evanston.
A 10 minute walk home.

But if I move into the city I may frequent this airport more and bump it up 1/2-1 star.

Yesterday morning, as I awaited my flight back to the Bay Area, I couldn't help but be charmed by this little airport.  It was well lighted and clean, had ample seating, fun shops and a decent food court.  Then, quite literally the fog set in.

Who closes an airport on account of fog? In San Francisco, it would have to be The Fog a la John Carpenter to keep planes from taking off. My quick layover at Midway would be a day-long excursion.  Minus one star!

Then, as flight after flight was canceled, I settled in and opened my laptop only to discover that Wi-Fi was not Wi-Free.  Minus one star! So, begrudgingly I paid the $7 dollar fee and got to working so that I could make yesterday's deadlines.  Then, on to a hotel after all hope was lost about making it back home.

So, here it is 24 hours later,  I am out some sleep and almost $200 -- and I am still in Chicago.  My overall experience here has been OK. The check in security line was organized and quick.  However, this fog better lift soon...

Do you remember those old commercials for tootsie pops where the cartoon child would try to find out how many licks it took to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop?  He'd finally ask Mr. Owl, who would say:

"One.....Twhoooooooo.....Threee.  Three."

Well Mr. Owl must have designed the Men's restrooms at the Midway airport, at least in terminal B.  There are three stalls in each of the 3 bathrooms.  Three.  A total of 9 places to poop for the, I don't know, thousand or so people using terminal B.

After finding out that my flight was delayed for 3 hours, all I was looking forward to was making a nice taco, but I had to wait at the stalls for my turn.  I imagine somewhere Mr. Owl is laughing at me.

Convenient when I use Southwest Airlines to fly home.

But.

Why is it that no matter which gate I land in, it feels like I'm walking at least a mile to get to baggage claim?

I generally have a rule for myself that I do not review things such as...malls, big box stores and places such as...airports.

However, I lived in Chicago for 7 years and have never flown out of Midway. Obviously, I didn't know how good the world flies down on the south side. Seriously...If I ever have a choice again, my friendly skies will be starting on Cicero Ave.

Smaller, cleaner, shorter lines, less waiting, better food options, free wifi. The list goes on. Plus, Southwest flies outta Midway, which has gotten dramatically better with the new seating arrangement, etc.

Overall, excellent. Midway is now my preferred Chicago airport...and I promise I won't be any reviewing any large infrastructure anytime soon, back to the mom and pops of the world!

United is my airline of choice and they rarely have flights out of Midway (if any) so I typically fly out of o'hare.  However, every so often I find a good deal on southwest and find myself at Midway.  And I'll take Midway any day over O'hare- potbellys, a huge book store so I can load up on my chick lit, and most importantly....Ben and Jerrys!!

The check-in and security lines tend to be shorter than what you'll find at o'hare, but if you're traveling this holiday season I recommend getting there at least 2 hours early. Or you'll be running to catch your plane like the madwoman I was yesterday.  Speaking of which, I apologize and thank all the people I cut in the check-in and security line yesterday. You'll be happy to know I made my flight...hope you made yours!

I used to fly in and out of Midway so often over a span of three years (2003 to 2006) that everyone on the morning shift at Potbelly's in the terminal hub recognized me. There is a reason for this. Midway is how an airport should be - flights that actually leave within 30 minutes of their scheduled departure time, three terminals originating at the same point to reduce the distance between the security checkpoint and your gate, a parking garage that's a short walk across the street from ticketing, and accessibility via a 25 minute train ride from downtown. Also, if you are a Southwest Rapid Rewards member like I am, you will appreciate the number of flight options you have since they've taken this airport over like the Mongolian hordes took 13th century Asia.

If you rarely fly and/or have only flown out of O'Hare, you might have thought that the experience you had navigating a labyrinth of construction signs and exposed wires in order to get to your delayed (or canceled) flight was a fluke, or is just how airports are, but no - it does not have to be this way.

Unless you are flying internationally, Midway will usually be cheaper. It will also save you from the infuriated phone call you will inevitably make to a friend or significant other from your gate at O'Hare when it is announced that the plane you are supposed to board in 22 minutes is currently grounded in St. Louis due to an air-traffic logjam overhead.

I've been held up, delayed, toyed with and otherwise abused at Midway as much as I have O'Hare, but its generally cheaper to use Midway as its a little more of a dump with less tax writeoffs and businesses to keep it afloat.

This is an airport not to expect any accomodations in, which can be strange for some chicagoans who have experienced O'Hare. Bring some food and expect to have your peckers pickled by the TSA.

Seconding total lack of veg cuisine. Bad enough the food sucks in general, worse that I can basically get a cup of coffee.

My family lives about 2 and a half hours away, so Chicago is usually a last choice. Being the holiday season, and tickets being crazy out of control, the cheapest flights were into Midway. Luckily, my parents love me enough to make the drive.
Anyway, I was shocked at how easy everything was. I flew out of there on Dec. 29th. It should have been nuts. I got through the line and security in about half an hour! Wow. Easy drop off and pick up. Space at the bar to have a drink. Not one snotty remark by anyone. So nice not to end your vacation in a nuthouse like O'hare.

I flew into Midway last September and had a very positive experience.  Although it was a red eye flight the airport wasn't shut down and I was able to get a cab easily.  The bathrooms were clean and it was easy to find your way around, there were a few stores and places to eat open but I didn't have a chance to stop.

The lines were fast. The food selections were decent local establishments. The place was straightforward, brightly lit, clean, and friendly. Via the El, it only took me an hour to get there from my apartment in Lakeview. And the cost savings obtained through not using a cab plus flying Southwest has helped stave off post-holiday bank account guilt.

For individuals looking for some non-greasy airport food, it does exist at Midway! The Tuscan Salad at Harry Careys has got heart of palm, artichoke heart, red peppers, cucumbers, and mozzarella. Yum! And while a $10.95 salad is reflective of most airport food prices, I was shocked at how good this massive salad was.

I flew out of midway a handful of times this summer and it was a good experience.  It was extremely easy and quick to get to from my workplace downtown via the orange line.

The airport is decent - once you get through security there are a few places with food, souvineers, books, etc.  The food is nothing special - I don't eat meat and have a hell of a time finding something to eat - that doesn't cost $10 or more.  I tried Gold Coast's veggie burger once, bleh.

It is easier to navigate than O'Hare and the lines do seem to be shorter.  If I was traveling in the USA I wouldn't have a preference over either airport - unless the flight was early in the morning and then it would have to be O'Hare because the trek to Midway is just too long from my apartment.

You have two choices when traveling out of Chicago: Midway or O'Hare. Granted, I've only flown out of O'Hare once, but it was not a good experience. My flight was seriously delayed and I very nearly missed my connecting flight. That would have killed me. I think that if you're leaving from O'Hare you have to be immune to tardiness and prepared to face the delays on the Blue Line.

Not at Midway! I swear, just about every single flight I've taken has left on time. It takes me longer to get there on the CTA, but I always know I can breeze through check in and security once I step off the Orange Line. They're doing a lot of construction between the CTA station and the terminal, but it's still easy to find your way. Midway has good restaurant options, which is great because Southwest doesn't give you a meal. I've found that fellow travelers are generally friendly at Midway too.

My only gripe is that it takes a while to get your baggage. So try to be patient. Or just do carry-on.

(Sidenote: I always wonder why they show people sleeping on cots at O'Hare, but never at Midway. Go figure.)
